Skill battles sass at Katepwa Trash Talk Challenge

Fourteen players from across Saskatchewan attended the first-ever Trash Talk Challenge at Katepwa Beach on
Jan. 14. Gage McKay topped the field, with Jeri-Ann Brownbridge taking the Women’s Division.

Gage McKay made fire with a slim tie for the lead after Round 1 to win the 2023 Katepwa Trash Talk Challenge on Jan. 14.

The Balcarres-area golfer was tied for first at two under par with Regina, Sask’s Brian Teifenbach after the opening 12 holes of the 24-hole challenge at Katepwa Beach, Sask. McKay stamped the event in his favor by one stroke in Round 2 to finish at minus-six. Teifenbach and the McKay-family “padre,” Ian McKay, split the remainder of the cash prize in second at minus-five.

Matthew Verhood completed the podium in third at minus-three.

In the Women’s Division, Jeri-Ann Brownbridge out-paced travel-mate Bobby Jo Moore by scoring a five-stroke advantage at minus-11.

A total of 14 athletes enjoyed mild winter conditions at Katepwa Provincial Park and its temporary, 12-hole layout that brought the frozen lake into the mix. The event attracted players from throughout the province, including Saskatoon, Regina and Watrous, Sask.

Known as “Two rounds of the cheekiest disc golf on the Prairies,” the Trash Talk Challenge allowed competing card mates to chirp each other while they made their shots. In this regard, three players stood out from the pack.

Brownbridge and Kipling, Sask.’s Matty Gee carried enough oxygen in the bag to win the “Persistency/Consistency” award. Meanwhile, the Chirp of the Day came from Moore. Context is required to explain it, so you literally should have signed up and attended to get it.

No player claimed an ace on the day, but Saskatoon’s Damnrights (Bogey Knights) pocketed the Ace Pot after edging out Mangy Coyote in a tournament-concluding closest-to-the-pin competition.

The Katepwa Trash Talk Challenge was sponsored by Mangy Coyote Media, Team Deadly Disc Golf, and CDI Injury Recovery Centre; Where the Best Athletes Get Better.
