112th Grey Cup Preview: Riders vs Alouettes

Image
Rider/Alouette matchup spurring “13th Man” PTSD flashbacks; Fans request “anxiety zones” in Princess Auto Stadium We’re all still a little hungover from the 2025 Canadian Football League divisional championship Saturday. Game 1 had the Montreal Alouettes punch their ticket to the Grey Cup in Winnipeg next weekend on a last-play field goal to defeat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a defensive battle. Cut to more than three hours later, when the Saskatchewan Roughriders punch in a three-yard rush for a touchdown and a last-minute three point victory for themselves. All of Saskatchewan heaved a sigh of relief. The offence looked sloppy versus the British Columbia Lions through the opening half. In true Rider fashion, the defence did what it could to keep them in the match and it worked. Now, the Roughriders and the Alouettes will clash in the ‘Peg more than a decade and a half after they last met for a Cup. Montreal has the nuts right now, carrying two victories in the championship final versu...

LIVE BLOG: CFL Western Div. Final: Sask. Roughriders vs BC Lions

Image
I know. I am not naive. If you say I am – again – I’m calling my septuagenarian mother. She’ll have words. I know this is not the way to get your content seen by eyeballs attached to human brains. I suspect this post will get less views than a picture of a caterpillar on a turd, but frankly, I don’t give a turd for that image. This is where I am. The Lions won six of their last seven heading into the  Western Division semi-final  versus the  Calgary Stampeders . The game is expected to be a battle of a stiff, ball-chasing, sack-bagging  Rider defence  against a running game led by Lion ...

WHERE TO PLAY: Rocanville Trail Disc Golf Course

Image
The beautifully terrifying tunnels of Rocanville Trail DGC.   Disc golfers of all levels will, at some point, be humbled by the challenge presented by the Rocanville Trail Disc Golf Course's 18-hole track. But once you get on it, you will be back to defeat it. Tight lines through narrow fairways lined with thick bush will bring your game to its knees. It's 18-holes of delicate driving and finesse approaches. Your short-game will improve here. Rocanville Trail is located about two kilometres south of Rocanville, Sask. along Range Road 1314 (Webster Cemetery Road). The course runs through a substantial part of the Rocanville Cross Country Ski Club's system of ski trails. Disc golf arrived at the facility in 2013 with the help of the Parkland Association of Disc Golf out of Yorkton, Sask. A few adjustments were made to the course through the following four years under the guidance of course director Chris Istace. One advancement - set to arrive in 2023 - is an alternate, par-...

Ritskes wins tight battle for 2022 MVP Space Race Swift Current

Image
Swift Current's Riverside Park Disc Golf Course hosted its 2022 MVP Space Race on  Nov. 12 with a full field of competitors from across Saskatchewan. (Photo: IG @ironwolf4579) Swift Current athlete Isaac Ritskes punched a minus-15 in early-winter conditions to win the 2022 MVP Space Race at Riverside Park Disc Golf Course on Nov. 12. Ritskes was a member of a packed field of 36 hardy competitors attending the satellite event. Mild conditions leading up to the event suggested players would get one last chance at a snowless 2022 tournament. Instead, about four inches of snow fell during the lead-up week, forcing players to reach into their bag of tricks for winter golf earlier than expected. "It surpassed my expectations, definitely," said Swift Current Space Race tournament director (TD) Patty Putts . "There was a lot of commitment to come play from the out-of-towners and within our small community despite the time of year, the weather." Ritskes charged to the f...

Image
WBDGCU title holders Gage and Ian McKay with Tournament Director Chris Istace (centre) For the first time tournament history, the World Bush Disc Golf Championships of the Universe (WBDGCU) has repeat title-holders after a tight shoot-out at Rocanville Trail Disc Golf Course on Oct. 1. Two years after claiming the WBDGCU belts, the father-son doubles team of Ian and Gage McKay from Peepeekisis First Nation hoisted the leather and brass trophies again, posting the top score of minus-20 through two 18-hole rounds of golf. The McKays sat in a three-way tie for first place at minus-eight after Round One with Ryan Tardif/Andrew Savage and Evan Drader/Dan Fortier. The ultimate champs had more to say in Round Two, however, blasting a minus-12 and taking the championship by two strokes over Drader and Fortier (-8, -10/-18). Rocanville Trail representatives Josh and Chris Istace rounded out the podium in third place at minus-14 after defeating Tardif/Savage on a scorecard countback. A birdie on...

Disc Golf: A new, faster, funner way to play

Image
Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in North America. A pair of facilities in at the Moosomin Regional Park and at the Rocanville Cross-Country Ski Club are bringing this simple, fun, relaxing activity to this area. (Above picture taken at the Rocanville Cross-Country Ski Club facility) Are you tired of spending hundreds - if not thousands - of dollars on equipment and membership fees to play the game of golf? Are you frustrated with the amount of time it consumes; the packed courses; the less-than-courteous actions of some players; the lack of facility availability? With the establishment of one course at the Rocanville Cross-Country Ski Club just south of Rocanville, and the scheduled development of another this spring at the Moosomin Regional Park (MRP), disc golf will be quickly catching the imagination of residents in the area. Both facilities have been designed by members of the Parkland Association of Disc Golf , of which I am a foun...
