For the first time tournament history, the World Bush Disc Golf Championships of the Universe (WBDGCU) has repeat title-holders after a tight shoot-out at Rocanville Trail Disc Golf Course on Oct. 1.

Two years after claiming the WBDGCU belts, the father-son doubles team of Ian and Gage McKay from Peepeekisis First Nation hoisted the leather and brass trophies again, posting the top score of minus-20 through two 18-hole rounds of golf.

The McKays sat in a three-way tie for first place at minus-eight after Round One with Ryan Tardif/Andrew Savage and Evan Drader/Dan Fortier. The ultimate champs had more to say in Round Two, however, blasting a minus-12 and taking the championship by two strokes over Drader and Fortier (-8, -10/-18).

Rocanville Trail representatives Josh and Chris Istace rounded out the podium in third place at minus-14 after defeating Tardif/Savage on a scorecard countback. A birdie on Hole 17 handed the Istace’s the advantage.

The 2022 WBDGCU introduced the Rick Goraluk Memorial tablets for Second Flight competitors. The McKays were represented here as well, with younger sibling Chase McKay and teammate Deshawn Klassen of Swift Current winning the inaugural championship. The team shot minus-eight, one stroke better than the Rocanville/Regina combination of Bob Deptuck and Leland Foley. Melville-based Reed and Kyla Wishnevetski earned third spot with a minus-four.

The fifth annual tournament was held at the Rocanville Cross-Country Ski Club and trails, attracting a total of 28 players from throughout the province. Sponsored by CDI Injury Recover Centre of Moosomin, Chance the Gator Disc Golf Supplies of North Battleford, and Instagram’s Jeri-Ann Brownbridge and Arlen Nickel of Regina (@ironwolf4579), the World Bush Disc Golf Championship of the Universe was established in 2017 and has become Saskatchewan’s largest doubles event of the season.
