The sun has set on the inaugural OKDS Frozen Chains Melville Disc Golf Putting League with one family dominating the final 2023 standings.

The McKays from Peepeekisis First Nation claimed the top two spots in the Open Division and first place in the Women’s Division through six weeks of play at Miller School in Melville. Gage McKay claimed first in Open and first overall with a final score of 450 points over his best four rounds. His father Ian was second with 375, while Melville league director Reed Wishnevetski claimed third with 364.

Overall, Melville finished seventh in the OKDS Frozen Chains circuit, which includes leagues in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Melville’s 21 players finished with a club average of 51.4 per cent putts-made. This was about 25 points behind the first-place Frozen Chains Kelowna.

While the McKay duo took control of the Open Division, Tammy McKay - the matriarch - notched 191 points for first place in the Women’s competition. In the national league standings, Gage and Ian placed in the top-ten overall, while Tammy placed third among women in all seven circuit locations.

McKay was 101 ahead of second place Shirley Schlecter. Chelsey Kirschman was third at 79.

The other divisional winners included Dan Coomber in Advanced, Nolan Schlecter in Intermediate, and Bryan Sies in Beginner.

Wishnevetski said the first-ever disc golf putting league in Melville exceeded his expectations with about a dozen players participating on Sunday afternoon putting sessions in the Miller School gymnasium. He plans on expanding the league next winter.

“Another surprise of the league this year was having more regulars attending in the Women’s Division than the Open Division,” he said.

“I would expect next year to have at least 20 participants and a larger amount of junior and beginner participation.”

Wishnevetski says the local disc golf season will resume in May and June with junior clinics. The Melville Disc Golf Club will resume its summer, bag-tag league schedule in July and August, and a biweekly doubles league is being considered as well.
