DGPT Rundown: Las Vegas Challenge by Innova: MPO Round 2

Barela, Jones, McMahan take charge on LVC’s Day 2

Yesterday’s co-leader Anthony Barela set the pace in Round 2 of the Las Vegas Challenge presented by Innova on Friday.

With weather conditions still cool but calmer than the previous day in Henderson, NV, Barela shared the hot round of the day with a minus-12, spiking him to the top of the leaderboard at minus-20. The six-year pro relied on long, accurate drives to overcome some putting hiccups within 30 feet. The short-misses didn’t seem to cost him, as he played bogey free golf.

Meanwhile, Kevin Jones maintained his hold on second place, putting together a round of minus-10, leaving him at minus-17. Jones signed a scorecard free of bogey blemishes, as did Eagle McMahan, who also took hot round honours with a minus-12 on the day. He now sits third alongside yesterday’s co-leader Scott Withers. They are followed by Andrew Marwede at minus-14, while Calvin Heimberg and Luke Samson are seven strokes of the pace at minus-13.

Canadian representatives Thomas Gilbert and Chris Ozolins are currently on the outside looking in. They will need to make drastic moves to get through the cut line set for the final round of play. Gilbert is tied at 99th with plus-3 after plugging a minus-2 today, while Ozolins duplicated his results from yesterday and is at plus-4.

Other Notes

Grand Junction, CO pro Aaron Gossage climbed 49 spots on the leaderboard after becoming the third player to shoot minus-12 on Friday. After shooting even in Round 1, he’s tied for 13th. So is Clint Calvin, who pocketed a minus-11 to climb 39 spots to 13th.

The FPO division returns to the course Saturday at 11 a.m. CST, with the MPO division following at 3:30 p.m. Although temperatures are supposed to improve slightly tomorrow, there is an 86 per cent chance of rain in the forecast for the Las Vegas region. Conditions could be especially challenging at Wildhorse DGC, where fairways are cut short and discs have a tendency to skip.
